Startup Guide

Open a Business
in Albania

Register a company in 1–5 days. €1 minimum capital. 15% corporate tax. Here's exactly how to build your legal business foundation in Albania.

The Case

Why Albania for your startup?

Albania isn't just a great place to live as a nomad — it's a serious jurisdiction to build a company. The business environment has been actively reformed since the 2010s: registration is digitised, taxes are low, and the government explicitly wants foreign investment. For founders building lean, global companies, the numbers are hard to beat anywhere in Europe.

Fastest Setup in the Region

Company registration via the National Business Center (QKB) takes 1–5 business days online. No lawyers required to register — though recommended for complex structures.

💰

Tax Rates That Extend Your Runway

15% corporate income tax. 0% for businesses under ~€130K annual turnover. 8% dividends tax. No minimum capital requirement that ties up cash.

👥

Hire Local Talent at Local Prices

Once incorporated, you can hire Albanian employees or contractors legally. Employer social contributions are ~22% — compared to 28–45% in Western Europe.

🌍

EU Candidate Country

Albania is on the EU accession path with active negotiations. Your company structure today will align well with future EU operating requirements.

For 95% of digital nomads and startup founders, the SHPK (Shoqëri me Përgjegjësi të Kufizuar) is the right choice. It's the Albanian equivalent of a UK Ltd or German GmbH — limited liability, simple governance, can have 1 to unlimited shareholders, and is what local and international accountants know best.

Step-by-Step

How to register your company

  • 01

Choose and reserve your company name

Check availability on QKB's online portal (qkb.gov.al). Names must be unique in Albania. Avoid names that imply government association or use of "Albania" without permission.

  • 02

    Prepare your documents

Passport or ID of all shareholders and directors. Proof of registered office address (rental contract or ownership documents for the business address). Shareholder information and intended share split.

  • 03

Register via QKB online or in person

Submit via the National Business Center portal at qkb.gov.al. Registration fee is approximately 4,800 ALL (~€43). Processing takes 1–5 business days. You receive a NUIS (business ID number) upon approval.

  • 04

Register for taxes with the Tax Authority

After QKB registration, register with the Albanian Tax Authority (DPT) for VAT (if applicable) and corporate income tax. This can be done online via the e-tax portal.

  • 05

    Open a business bank account

With your NUIS and registration documents, open a business account at one of Albania's major banks (Raiffeisen, OTP, BKT, Credins). Typically takes 3–7 business days.

  • 06

    Appoint an accountant

Albania requires quarterly tax filings and annual financial statements. A local accountant costs €100–200/month and handles all compliance. Essential from day one.

Where to find talent

  • LinkedIn Albania — direct candidate search and job postings
  • infojobs.al and punë.al — local job boards with high CV volume
  • University direct outreach — Polytechnic University of Tirana, UBT, Polis
  • Coworking spaces (Ofiçina, Impact Hub) — informal talent networks
  • Albanian tech Facebook groups — very active developer communities
  • Our community Telegram — post openings to a qualified expat/bilingual audience

Contractor vs Employee: Many Albanian professionals work as contractors/freelancers. This reduces your compliance burden but requires care — Albania has rules about disguised employment. Ask your accountant to advise on structure per hire.
